 President Elect Lionel's Message
on behalf of President Lynette

Hi Everyone,

Our speaker this week was Emily Stuart a student from Craighead who attended the 2025 Rotary National Science and Technology Forum in Auckland during January. Emily gave us a good summary of what she experienced at the forum.  She also answered a good number of questions from members. Emily is unsure at present which university she will attend next year, either Otago or Canterbury seems to be the front runners at present.

A very big thank you to our club members Tony Henderson, Jim Garden and President Lynette Wilson, who started the replacement of boards that had split in the fence at the Park Centre. This replacement of boards and fence caps is continuing, a big thanks to these Rotarians who continue to go the extra mile for our community.

The Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) programme comes to Levels Raceway in early April, we as a club will be asking for interest in helping on both days of the 8th and 9th of April.
  • Our Club committed funding from the Charitable Trust and Eric Hall Trust to enable this programme to continue this year. We welcome students from all South Canterbury High Schools again this year, following a withdrawal of funding by both national and local government. Road Safety Education (RSE) are all confirmed and ready to go on the 8th and the 9th of April at Levels Raceway.
  • The 8th April is Mountainview High School, Waimate High, Timaru Girls and Craighead,
  • The 9th is Roncalli, Geraldine High and Opihi.
  • Can you give your names to Greg Sugrue if you wish to assist on either day please?

The Charitable Trust at their meeting in February agreed to support the Rotary Foundation by providing the D9999 Rotary Foundation with NZ$125 per member as well as NZ$25 per member to support the “End Polio” campaign.

Andrea Lord asked members to contact her if they wanted to be involved with the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) programme.

Tony Henderson advised members that the next “Kindling cutting” morning will be Saturday 12th April at the Wood shed starting from 9am.

A reminder to members to think about being involved in the Altrusa Quiz Nite at the Sail on Wednesday 19th March starting at 7pm- contact John Rushton if you want to be involved.

As a club we have been asked by the T & C to change rooms to the Conservatory room so the T & C can open up current room to Raffles now running on a Tuesday.

The Happy Dollar had a good number of responses, of good news!!

An interesting Fact for today in History- 11th March 2011:
“A 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck 130 km (80 miles) east of Sendai, Japan, triggering a tsunami killing thousands of people and causing the second worst nuclear accident in history at Fukushima nuclear plant.”

Our next formal club meeting will be 25th March, 5:30pm onwards in the conservatory, our speaker will be Tim Exton from DOC on predator trapping and predator free NZ 2025.
The Charitable Trust will meet at 8pm on that night as well.

Our next Club Board meeting will be held at 4:30pm on 8th April at T & C.

Catch up again soon,

Lionell

This Week's Guest Speaker

Rotary Foundation Newsletter

March 2025

Excerpts:

Polio Plus – 3 cases in Pakistan in January/February 2025

Rotary International, as the civil society partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, continues to call for steadfast dedication to the effort. “We have overcome every setback through collaboration and unity of purpose that is rare in our fragmented world,” said Dr Pierre Hoffmeyer, Rotary International representative to the United Nations in Geneva. “Let us all remain united and unwavering in our commitment to end polio.”
We can all do our small part by continuing to raise the US$50m/year that Rotary has pledged in order to attract the 2:1 match from the Gates Foundation – we can’t give up on this now!
