This week we have a unique opportunity to see, hear and ask questions live from Scott Base in the Antarctic.

 

Scott Base a New Zealand research facility located on Ross Island near Mt Erebus and named in honour of Captain Robert Falcon Scott RN, the leader of two expeditions to this area of Antarctica.

 

The base was originally set up as a centre for research into earth studies and now conducts research in many other fields. The base can accommodate 85 people over summer with a 'skeleton staff' of between 10 and 14 people remaining over winter.

Rose is the Winter Base Leader, managing the winter-over team for the 2016/17 season. She oversees the general operations at Scott Base, liaises with other International Antarctic programmes, acts as a JP for Ross Island and, as a medic, provides medical support and emergency response for base staff and visitors.

Our NRG’s Jessica Hewitson has recently become a member of the District Youth Exchange Committee and she has sent the following report: 

Last weekend I attended the RYE (Rotary Youth Exchange) Orientation Weekend at Berwick Lodge Camp.

We welcomed the new inbound foreign exchange students learning about the countries they have come from five weeks ago and also preparing the outbound Kiwi students who will set off for their exchange in January 2018. Inbound Students are from Switzerland, Austria, France, Denmark, Sweden, Taiwan and Chile. All of the outbound Kiwis are heading to these countries, so we have seven inbound and seven outbound students.

The Temuka/Geraldine club is hosting Astrid from Sweden. She is the only one up this end of the District with the rest are based with clubs in Dunedin, Cromwell and Invercargill. Perhaps we could invite Astrid to our club one evening? 

We even managed to plant native trees in the Sinclair Wetlands as part of the weekend activities, helping Rotary Clubs of Dunedin, Mosgiel, Taieri, Milton and Balclutha with a huge project they have organised as part of Rotary International's Tree Planting goal for the year.

Alzheimers South Canterbury is holding its Annual Memory Walk in the Botanic Gardens at 11.00am on Saturday 16th September. The walk is around the Park Centre  and there will be entertainment and a sausage sizzle on completion of the walk.

 

The Memory Walk is a chance for everyone in our community to honour family members or share a memory of a loved one. It is an opportunity to show support for those who suffer from dementia and their carers. We are asking participants to wear a purple T-shirt. These are available free from the office of Alzheimers South Canterbury at Communit6y House, 27 Strathallan Street.
