We welcomed Pat Goodwin to our last meeting as Speaker. Pat is a retired Nurse, a member of Greypower, and is also working towards re-establishing a “Friends of the Hospital” group. The focus of the group would be very different to that of the previous group of the same name, as many of the functions they fulfilled are no longer required, but she has already identified a number of 'projects' around the hospital that will require volunteers and funding to complete, and she sees her role to canvass for suggestions/projects and funding in the community to move forward. The Arts Society have recently donated some artwork for the Children’s ward, and pupils from some local schools have been challenged to create some artwork for the walls also. There was much discussion, and ideas/suggestions flowed, with contacts and networking opportunities to follow up.
This was followed by a brief “Club Forum” where we checked on the progress of our club's “Goals”, along with other matters:
· “Cans for a Cause” – those present agreed not to support this project, as it was felt there were already enough collections happening locally.
· Members were advised that the new Trustee Nomination form is now available.
· Lionel advised that an application to Air NZ for their “Every Corner Project” has been successful. This grant will be used to provide 6 x AI cameras to assist with the Predator trapping programme for “Predator Free South Canterbury” – Fantastic news!!!
It was with pleasure also that we welcomed Allen Forrester, a recent immigrant from South Africa to our meeting. Allen also joined us at our recent Kindling Day and is enjoying his life in New Zealand.
On Thursday evening, we had a good turnout of members attend the Theatre Production of “The Secret Lives of Extremely Old People”. There are many times I am sure we could all identify with during the show, it was a fun night out and thanks to Tony Henderson for managing this for us.
Our Hot Dog van will be in action again next weekend, on Friday evening at the YMCA Street Party, then on Sunday at the Kyle Park Open Day. Thank you to those who have volunteered their time to help, both of these are new events for us, so it will be interesting to take part.
Our next club meeting will be held Tuesday 27th May at the Timaru Town & Country Club 5:30pm onwards, as usual.
Catch up again soon,
Lynette
