 President Lynette`s Message

Hi Everyone,

Our speaker this week was Department of Conservation Ranger, Tim Exton, more details below. This meeting was our first in the new room location.  Same venue, just through in the Conservatory.

A BIG vote of thanks was also given to those who assisted with the operation of the Hot Dog Van at the Rock & Hop event.  This was a very busy and successful day for us, and the hot weather helped with the cold drink sales.  The Hospice organizers of the event were very complimentary.  Well done everyone.

7 Rotarians in various teams, recently supported Altrusa in their fundraising Quiz night – none of us in the winning team, but also not last – a lot of fun, and at least I took home two raffle prizes.

Last weekend, thank you to Greg Sugrue, John Rushton, Andrea Lord, Jenny & Basil Ensor, Gilly Oppenheim, Tony Henderson, Jim Garden, Myself, and Lionel, we completed the painting of the fences at the Park Centre, and they look amazing.   Replacing the cracked/damaged boards and applying a coat of primer has been ongoing over the past few weeks, thanks to Tony Henderson & Jim Garden, also joined latterly by Bruce Borrell, and I enjoyed assisting. Yes, there was blood, (the little metal name spikes in the garden were lethal on the shins) sweat and tears of laughter, it is great to have finally finished the project (see images below).

The Fantastic team at Branded Kiwi (Signwriters) completed the Wishing Well refurbishment last week, and it now looks brilliant (image below).  Take a walk up to the top of the Bay Hill and look for yourself, you can’t miss it now.

CCS celebrate their 90-year anniversary this week.  Rotary were instrumental in the creation of CCS, following an idea from a National Rotary Convention.

District Changeover luncheon – 5th July:  A date to enter in your Diaries, as the venue for changeover this year will be Claremont Castle.

Our next club meeting will be held this coming Tuesday (8th April) at the TT&C. 5:30pm onwards, as usual.   This will be preceded with a Board meeting at 4:30pm.

The next Charitable Trust meeting will be held on Tuesday 29th April – a week later than usual, due to members attending the Ashburton meeting on Tuesday 22nd April.

Thoughts and best wishes for a speedy recovery are extended to several of our members who have been experiencing some health events recently.  Take care.

Catch up again soon,

Lynette

This Week's Guest Speaker
Tim Exton from DOC

Predator Trapping and Predator Free NZ 2025

Our speaker this week was Department of Conservation Ranger, Tim Exton, who is based in Geraldine.  Tim talked about his role in the local area, including Bugs, Birds, Bats and Traps, and some of the fauna they are trying to protect in our area.

He also gave a BIG “Thank you” to our Club, and Rotary D9999, siting the success of the recent “Weekend of Connection” in initiating the launch of Pest Free Timaru, three weeks ago – which had been in the planning stages for about 4 years.
Tim asked that if you have an issue with animals in your neighbourhood (possum, wild cats, ferrets, stoats etc.), get in touch with DOC and they can advise on the best course of action.

Tim helped to build traps with us a few weeks back, at the D9999 Weekend of Connection.

Park Centre Fence Painting

March 2025

It is great to have finally finished the project, but our morning teas in the park were a welcome de-stress.  I was amazed by the numbers of people wandering past, who stopped for a chat and passed lovely compliments, thanking us for the work Rotary are doing to benefit the community. (wearing my club hi-viz may have helped), and overseas visitors stopping to recount their involvement with Rotary in their own country of origin.
- President Lynette.

Wishing Well Completed

Many thanks to Blastcraft, Rushton Architects, and Branded Kiwi (see panels on left) for their efforts in getting the Wishing Well up and looking brand new.
