President Peter's Message

I recently met Dr. Muhammad Khalid, the ophthalmologist who replaced Michael Mair who retired in July 2015. His role includes eye surgery at Timaru Hospital and working at the Timaru eye clinic in High Street. We talked about our Rotary Club's involvement in the Fred Hollows Foundation and he readily agreed to come and give our club a talk which will be on Tuesday April 17th. He first came to Timaru as a locum and enjoyed it so much he took up the position permanently. He is joined here by his wife, also a doctor and their three children. He grew up in Pakistan where his father and aunt were both doctors. He took up a position as consultant ophthalmologist and clinical lead at Hastings Memorial Hospital in Hawke's bay in 2013.We look forward to welcoming him to our club.

Hot Dog Caravan Clean Working Bee.
There was a good turnout to give the Hot Dog Van a thorough clean inside and out Last Friday 23rd February.
Photo shows Jim Garden, Bruce Borrell & Lance Wensley cleaning HDV. Other cleaners were Russell Finlay, Bev Slooten, Judy Dolman, Gilly Oppenheim & myself who in total volunteered 21 hours.

Horror Maze 2018.
Once again we have been asked for volunteers to help out with security "within" the maze (yes, this year some of us will actually be "in the maze" itself) and manning the front gate.
Dates are: 16th/17th Feb, 24th Feb, 2nd/3rd March and 9th/10th March. Times 8.30pm-11.30pm and they are
asking for between 7-12 people on each date.

Waimate Club Invitation.
This is an invitation to the members of Rotary Club of Timaru to join the Rotary Club of Waimate on Thursday 8th March at 5.30pm for a 6.15pm meeting start. The cost of the meal is $18.00 per person and can you please RSVP to me by Monday the 5th March
Kirsten Patterson (known as KP) is the Institute of Directors Chief Executive. Formerly the Country Head of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, she is a qualified lawyer and Chartered Fellow of the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand. She has extensive governance and leadership experience, and is actively involved in community initiatives.
A strong advocate of diversity, KP was one of the founding members of Global Women’s ‘Champions for Change’, a group of senior executives and directors who commit to diversity in the workplace. She is also a founding member of WiSPA, an organisation promoting women in sport, and mentors a number of business leaders and an ex-Olympic athlete.
The 8th March is International Women’s Day, so we are celebrating with Kirsten coming all the way from Wellington to address us. It will be a great evening and we hope as many of you as possible can attend

Centennial Fund Proposal
Object:
Set aside funds over the next ten years to mark the 100th Centennial Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Timaru and make a lasting gift to the people of this community who we have supported and who have supported this club.
Fund target amount:
$100,000 would be a meaningful figure equating to $1,000 for every year the club has been in existence.
Where will the funds come from:
If the gift is of a charitable nature, $5,000 per annum from the Charitable Trust matched by a special fundraising activity each year for the remaining $5,000.
Type of gift:
That can be decided upon during the last 5 year period.
The above will be discussed at the 3rd April tea meeting & a motion moved to allow (if passed) planning to be started.
