They keep telling us Spring is here, now it is September!!
Some people say Spring begins on the first of September, they are typically using the Meteorological definitions of seasons, which defines seasons by calendar months.
This contrasts with Astronomical definitions which is defined by the earth tilt and its orbit around the sun, marked by two equinoxes and two solstices. The spring equinox arrives on Tuesday 23rd September at 6.19am this year and the summer solstice is Monday 22nd December at 4.02am! - What’s your pick?
Birthdays – No Birthdays this coming meeting
Outcomes of our last Charitable Trust meeting in late August.
- The applicant closure date of the Rotary science and Technology forum was last Friday, we have one applicant for this programme. Our applicant will be interviewed, please watch this space for an update on details.
- An application from Age Concern (S.C) for a new Laptop was agreed, and trustees provided $$ toward this equipment needed to keep providing support to many elderly people in South Canterbury.
- Another motion agreed to was for the Charitable Trust to release funding to the Rotary Club of Kathmandu for their three (3) toilet project to support female pupils to have appropriate toilets, in three Rural High schools in Nepal. The funds to be sent to Kathmandu have come from the Richmond Rotary club in Nelson and our own Charitable Trust as well.

- A huge thank you to Liona Stanicich from Road Safety Education (RSE) for her putting forward an application for a National Award for our Rotary club. The Award is “The Toyota Community Award” in recognition of an outstanding commitment to Youth Road Safety Education through long-term support of the RYDA Programme, which Liona presented to our club, along with Mark Patterson and Gareth Heywood from Toyota (S.C.).
- We are now heading into a busy period with support needed for the Hot Dog Van (HDV) at Fraser Park and the Heartland Rugby games, starting from the 6th of September.
- RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) Applications are out for both Christchurch and Queenstown events, see Secretary Lynette Wilson for details, if you have a potential attendee for either course.
- Christchurch age group is 18 to 25 and Queenstown age group is 20 to 30.
- Remember Illuminate 2025 is here in Timaru!! – Dates are Friday 12, Saturday 13, Sunday 14 September and Friday 19, Saturday 20, and Sunday 21 September. We need volunteers to scan people into this event, more details will be forwarded when we receive them, in the meantime please notify John Rushton if you are available to do any shifts.
- Other Events – A good number of Rotarians and their partners attended the movie “Mr Burton” to support Altrusa’s Movie night fundraiser last Wednesday evening.
The next Rotary club of Timaru Charitable Trust meeting is scheduled for the 23rd of September at 8pm at our home.
At our Rotary club meeting this coming Tuesday - 9th September we will have our very own Francis Santos Potecella on His life in the Philippines as well as what Rotaract is up to where he lives.
STOP PRESS – The Club Constitution documents arrived in my “In Box” at 8.11pm Thursday evening! The Board will discuss how we proceed with this at our Board meeting on Tuesday. Please watch this space for a timeline to complete this club requirement.
