 President Lynette's Message

Hi Everyone,

It has been quite busy since our last meeting, and a HUGE thanks to John Rushton for organizing the very successful “Mystery” car trip to Oamaru and surrounds which was enjoyed by all and we look forward to the next one in anticipation.
Our Hot Dog Van was back in action at the first game on the newly re-opened Fraser Park, it was just a shame South Canterbury lost.
Lionel attended President-Elect learning in Christchurch and enjoyed getting to know his cohorts from across the district.

This week our guest speaker was Liona Stanicich, South Island Facilitator for RSE (Road Safety Education)/RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) programme.  Liona is employed by Road Safety NZ.

RYDA was first started in Australia as a Rotary programme, and in 2006 the Takapuna club instigated it in NZ.  As it grew, RSE joined.
The programme is run by 400 volunteers from 55 Rotary clubs and is currently reaching about 48% of all Year 12 students.  Participation in RYDA also now counts in credits towards National NCEA.
Our club supports RYDA, and has done for several years, with volunteers assisting during the two days the programme is run in Timaru each year.

We also welcomed visiting Rotarian Anna Leslie from the Rotary club of Newport-Balboa, Newport Beach, California, USA.  Anna was back in Timaru visiting family and joined us for the evening.  Great that she could also catch-up with Gilly Oppenheim, who was a past teacher of hers.

Next week Lionel, myself, Jess Wooffindin, and Julie Dockrill will be traveling to Queenstown to attend the Rotary Pacific Zone 8 Conference, we are looking forward to it. Raj from Nepal is a keynote speaker and was an integral part of the Thaplung Nepal Project Jess and Julie completed earlier in the year.  Raj will travel back with them and spend some time in our area prior to returning to Nepal. We look forward to welcoming him to our next meeting, 5th November.

Catch up again soon.
Lynette

TOOT FOR TUCKER

Lions have requested helpers to gather the items and drive vehicles, the experience gained from previous years suggests we need at least 2 collectors per tooting vehicle. The collecting will take place on Monday November 18th, meeting from 5:30pm at Timaru Order of St John public training room, entrance off Jackson Street, a safety briefing will take place before departure at 6pm.

Please reply to Lionel:       timaru.rotary.secretary@gmail.com by Monday 4th November, with the number of friends and family who can assist and if you can provide car, driver, runner etc.
