Last Saturday was our last “kindling chopping day” for a few months, and it was great to have such a wonderful turnout from members, past members, honorary members, friends, and family. 64 cartons of kindling were added to our depleted stocks, which will be very much appreciated.
We changed things around a bit last meeting, where we were joined by Viki McKenzie, President of Temuka/Geraldine Rotary Club, and a good number of members and partners from that club, for our meal at the TT&CC, then we adjourned to the Eco Centre for the second part of our meeting, where we were also joined by Peter Bell from Waimate Rotary club.
Brian Gallagher, a volunteer Trustee and Chair of the Sustainable South Canterbury Trust that operates and manages the Crow’s Nest re-use shop, various waste minimization activities and the South Canterbury Eco Centre, gave a background of the history of the site, dating back to 2015, when the building was purchased for $1 from the Highfield Tennis Club, and transported in sections to the current site at Redruth and eventually rebuilt as funding allowed, into the wonderful Resource Centre we now have available for the community and schools to access.
Brian outlined several project initiatives still on the 'wish list' and those present agreed the possibility of a collaborative 'weekend of connection' as requested by DG Dave McKissock could involve the Eco Centre – watch this space!
It was also my pleasure to 'welcome' Peter Jordan as a new member of the Rotary Club of Timaru.
The Jordan family have a long association with our club, with Peter’s father, (deceased), being a member for several years and his mother, Alison, regularly attending our Xmas functions. Peter remembers as a teenager, helping his dad with the design and building of the Maze our club ran for many years down at Caroline Bay.
This Sunday we have a “mystery” lunch destination, with members meeting at the Whitestone Cheese Café in Oamaru for morning tea, then proceeding on a jaunt in the country to their lunch destination. Thanks to John Rushton for organizing this fun event, unfortunately, due to a double booking, Lionel & I will be unable to attend, but I am sure those going will have a wonderful time.
Lionel will be attending President Elect Learning in Christchurch this weekend, a good chance to meet with his cohorts for next year, from around the District.
Catch up again soon
