Bev's. Message
I was involved with the setting up of the 'Neighbourhood Watch' scheme in our little corner of the Bay of Plenty in the mid 1980’s. ‘Being prepared’ was a very strong message that was made loud and clear at the time. However, it was also reassuring to know you weren’t going to be alone and someone would check on you in a time of need. It all swung into action following the Edgecumbe earthquake in March 1987.
Being able to visit your neighbour or having them visit was most reassuring.
It was timely to hear from Rob Coleman, Neighbourhood Support Co-ordinator, who talked about establishing the ‘southcanterburygetsready’ campaign in the area. He works alongside the NZ Police, Fire Emergency NZ, Civil Defence and South Canterbury Neighbourhood Support.
This weeks quiz will a little bit different to the norm. Raewyn Hutton, the President of Altrusa and myself thought it would be a good idea for both clubs to join forces this year rather than the usual "us vs them".
This will mean that as there are twenty one people coming from Altrusa there will have to be a minimum of one of their members per table.
The usual format of 20 questions from both sides will continue but the gambling of points over the final question will be given a miss.
There will be prizes for the two top teams.

Guest Speakers Question Time.
At the last Directors meeting the amount of time spent after a guest speaker has spoken with question time was discussed and was it decided that about 5 questions only be allowed (members can of course talk to the speaker after the meeting with any extra questions).

Gilly has been contacted by Altrusa and asked to publicise their upcoming ‘Roaring Twenties Dinner’ it is on again on 13 September.
Once again tickets will be limited in number and cost per person is $25.
